ghosts in the nursery
Years ago, I was working under a grant focused on providing therapeutic treatment to kids under 6 who had experienced trauma. We had all kinds of awesome training, but one simple article has always stuck out for me…it was titled “Ghosts in the Nursery” (I would link to it, but it doesn’t appear to be online in its entirety. if you really want it, email me and I’ll look in my files for it). Basically, when we parent, the “ghosts” of our parents and grandparents are right there in the nursery with us. Clearly, this can be a pleasant soiree… or not.
I’ve been offline for the past few days because the woman who raised my father through his teenage years died last week. (at times I say that she and her husband saved his life. when I think that this might be an exaggeration, I think of what his life would have been like had they not brought him out to their farm to live with their family. they saved his life.)
Eighteen hours in a car with a cranky husband, sick child and farting dog has given me plenty of time to think about this incredible woman, to ponder family dynamics, and to see the ghosts in my daughter’s nursery.
So I ask you, internet, how do you personally banish the ghosts who are not welcome in your nursery? Do we get to? Or are they just part of who we are, good and bad?
